George Pearson Centre/ GF Strong Centre, a part of Vancouver Coastal
Health would like to introduce you to the Driver Rehabilitation Centre.
The Centre offers an all-inclusive program consisting of in-clinic assessments,
on-road assessments, on-road lessons and vehicle/ equipment assessements,
which meets the needs of individuals with a disability.
The Centre has been involved with disabled driving in some form or another
since the early 1950's. To qualify into the program, candidates must be
at least 16 years of age and have a physical disability, or a physical
disability with a cognitive deficit from illness or injury. A referral
from a physician or the Medical Consultant of the Office of the Superintendent
of Motor Vehicles is required. An assessment report will be sent to the
referring agencies.
The Centre has a qualified staff consisting of a certified driver rehab
specialist, and licensed driving instructors specially trained to manage
clients with a disability.
Services
The Centre offers a variety of services. These include:
Driving lessons in specially equipped vehicles. A variety of hand controls are offered, plus other adaptations as required per the client.
Priority road test times at the Motor Vehicle Branch are available through the Driver Rehab Centre.
High Tech Assessment and Training Van which includes controls such as, Electonic Gas Brake control, Horizontal Zero Effort Steering, Unistick Controls, Digipad Controls etc., Removable Power Driver Seat and Wheelchair Tie Downs which allow clients to drive from their wheelchair.
